ABSTRACT

The final chapter of this book will offer a succinct summary of the core arguments presented, evaluating how far we've come in addressing the goals set out in the beginning, and take an optimistic outlook for future investigations. In particular, this chapter will focus on Griffin's call for the final, crowning chapter of the Darwinian revolution and examine whether the previous chapters have brought us closer towards achieving his vision. Finally, the chapter will address how the framework offered here may be used in the future to investigate mental disorders of consciousness, the moral status of possible cases for sentience – be that animal or machine – and how the framework can be further refined.
