ABSTRACT

In a true example of hands-on literacy, this chapter has students building, designing, and thinking critically across the curriculum with math skills, engineering skills, and graphic design as they plan, style, and create models for a character’s clothing. Based on descriptions of characters in a story, biography, or novel, students choose to create clothing and colors that fit the character—both literally and figuratively. For accuracy, clothing choices will need to fit a character’s personality, fit the story’s plot, and be true to the time and place of the setting. In a related activity, students will compare and contrast their characters with another student’s character from the same source.
