ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses common approaches to analyses in mixed methods research and ways that analyses can be reflexively integrated and interpreted to address complexity in educational issues. A reflexive process asks how different kinds of data answer the research questions, what assumptions researchers may have gotten wrong, and how to integrate the data to provide new or better explanations than current theories or practice. It contrasts common mixed methods analyses with a critical realist approach—an iterative process of moving among findings from different kinds of data, multiple theories, and alterative explanations of underlying mechanisms and relations to reframe theory within contexts. The chapter illustrates several examples of mixed methods analyses, showing how findings are analyzed, integrated, and interpreted. Finally, a reflexive approach to writing considers the authority and relevancy of knowledge and how researchers use different genres and voice to communicate the findings.
