ABSTRACT

Special education teachers are uniquely poised to offer equitable practice to a population of individuals who have been historically disenfranchised. Culturally responsive teaching is an imperative in the special education classroom, and it can result in a more enjoyable experience for teachers and students. As teachers celebrate students for who they are, they may see greater gains among students. This chapter helps special educators to understand that equity as a norm can create a more positive teaching and learning experience for all stakeholders involved. Special educators will find practical strategies to promote equitable opportunities for all learners, as well as activities teachers and students can complete to share their personal histories, deepen relationships, and create a positive and inclusive space for learning. Special education teachers may find energy and lasting rewards in fulfilling the promise of the culturally responsive classroom. The overarching message special education teachers need to convey to every student every day is, ‘I see you, I like you, and I’m glad you’re here.’ This chapter helps them to make this beautiful truth abundantly clear to students.
