ABSTRACT

The chapter explores the concept of boredom as an affective experience arising from embodied practices of assemblage. The concepts of affective niche construction and affective scaffolding are adopted to examine how affective intensities like boredom are triggered. The focus is on the ‘puzzle game’ genre, which is explored through two vignettes: a Cryptography lesson and a gaming session in The Turing Test. It analyses how affective intensities develop in each scenario and compares the emergence of engagement and boredom.
