ABSTRACT

In the context of the two countries analysed in the earlier chapters, the conclusions will outline how the various phases in the respective resistance campaigns unfolded. This also includes a discussion on the manner in which these resistance practices were used and applied. Thereafter, a comparative analysis explains how each of these campaigns impacted democracy in the two countries. This is followed by a presentation of the identified observable steps of the unfolding resistance campaigns process, from the time when the dominant power action changed the subaltern dramatically, to the time noticeable ‘democracy impact’ was felt in the two regions. As a second step, an identification of the steps taken at different times of the resistance campaigns has been done in order to extract a tentative theory for how civil resistance impacts democracy. Several new insights from the field studies have also added new inputs for where future studies on impact of civil resistance on social change should be directed; these have therefore been presented towards the end of this chapter.
