ABSTRACT

Life in the library was as pleasant as it could be in a prison environment. The Librarian had spent the whole of his life in the service, but his method of dealing with the men under him was a complete reversal of what obtained in the Shops. He was firm, but his firmness was tempered with real kindness and courtesy, and he won the respect and affection of everyone on the staff. During the whole of my time there I never saw one serious betrayal of the trust he reposed in his “boys.”
