ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 outlines the rationale for the book and important ways in which it differs from other guidebooks for thesis writing. The first point of difference lies in the dual focus. While most books focus on either preparing physically and emotionally for the thesis journey or writing in this genre, the book considers both topics as they are seen as deeply interconnected. The second difference is in the type of advice on offer. On the understanding that everyone is different, the authors do not believe that there is only one ‘correct’ way to write a thesis. They offer a wide range of options for the thesis writer to think about as they progress along their thesis journey. The authors achieve this through a series of fifty pointers, each of which aims to help thesis writers think about themselves and how they identify as a researcher and thesis writer.
