ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 focuses on identities vital for the successful completion of a thesis: those of a researcher, supervisee and thesis writer. The premise behind this chapter is that there are different ways to go about research, supervision and constructing a thesis. The chapter begins by examining researcher identities. It considers how researchers differ in their approaches to research, as well as commonalities that researchers share. The chapter then turns to consider questions around supervision with the view that each thesis writer has different needs and expectations around the types of supervision they need and the structure of supervision meetings. The chapter ends with a look at the ways that thesis writers construct text and how thesis writers change at different points in the thesis journey.
