ABSTRACT

Thesis writing requires making choices about how to present text. The 14 pointers in this chapter are centered around writing academic text and how to make ideas and words stand out for impact. Some of these pointers explore ways that headings, paragraphs and sentence structures enable text to cohere while keeping individual identity central to a thesis. Others consider how footnotes and appendices, tenses and knowing about word types can fine-tune textual clarity and keep writing centered. Still others explore word choices associated with authorship, including how to use the pronoun ‘I’ and available pronoun choices when citing authors. The chapter ends with a final pointer about differences in English language use. All advice is presented as options so thesis writers may consider and use all advice in ways that fit them and norms in the field with which they identify.
