ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the data from the ten native speaker participants. Section 6.2 summarizes the total inventory of discourse markers produced by the native speakers represented in this corpus. A full inventory of the individual discourse markers produced can be found in the appendix. Section 6.3 describes the functional distribution of discourse markers produced by the native speakers under study. This includes the identification of thirteen broad functional categories, which are each examined in detail with examples. Section 6.4 briefly discusses syntactic features of native speaker discourse marker use, including position relative to the clause and clustering. Section 6.5 examines two sociolinguistic variables that may contribute to the distribution of discourse marker production found in this corpus.
