ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the results of the learner discourse marker production. Section 7.2 describes the inventory of discourse markers that the learners produced broken down by proficiency level. The learner discourse marker inventory is examined by frequency and by task. Additionally in this section, unique features of learner discourse marker use are described to include the use of English discourse markers and discourse markers derived from verbs. Section 7.3 examines the distribution of discourse marker to function across thirteen functional categories, with examples for each one. Section 7.4 reviews syntactic features of learner discourse marker use to include position relative to the clause and clustering. Section 7.5 briefly reviews potential sociolinguistic considerations in this corpus.
