ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the first phase of a production, development. It includes the role of the executive producer in starting this process and how they go about getting a production off the ground. This process includes working with writers, developing a package, and writing a business plan. The business plan is outlined in terms of the various elements, such as the executive summary as well as the logline, treatment, and step outline. Other details include the industry statement, marketing, distribution, and how to project return on investment. It also explains what a pitch deck is, how to write it, and how to present it to potential investors.

There are generally seven phases of a film or TV show production: (1) film development, (2) pre-production, (3) production, (4) wrap, (5) post-production, (6) marketing, and (7) distribution. Each one of these phases is integral to fully complete any project, from low-budget to blockbuster. This chapter will explain what is involved in this first phase of development.
