ABSTRACT

This chapter covers various aspects of music on a film or television show. It begins by discussing copyright and how to go about licensing music for a show. It defines synchronization, master use, mechanical, public performance, adaptation, and print rights and when they are needed. Other legal issues include split rights and finding music in the public domain. The music department in a show is also discussed, including the duties and responsibilities of the music supervisor, composer, conductor, arranger/orchestrator, and copyist. The chapter concludes with the process of scoring music and a soundtrack album.
