ABSTRACT

This last chapter takes stock of the book and looks ahead. The four parts of the book have addressed four different sets of questions about democracy and autocracy: the what, the how, the when and where, the why, the so what, and the now what. The first part of this concluding chapter briefly summarizes the answers we have provided to each of these questions. The second part singles out subjects and questions of democratization and autocratization on which the jury is still out. We argue that the concept of democracy is open-ended and that theoretical and empirical perspectives can benefit from further disaggregation. We also identify more specific relationships in need of further study. We conclude that there has been much progress in the literature but that much work still needs to be done.
