ABSTRACT

This chapter explores leadership that makes a difference and will examine the appreciative leader, the ethical leader, the positive leader, the resonant leader and the authentic leader. Leadership is affected by change and as a result of the changes new leadership approaches emerge. Having reviewed the different approaches styles and traits of a leader in the NHS over the decades since its inception we can start to see how the approaches have changed over time from the autocratic to the bureaucratic, transformational leader. However, the newer paradigms of leadership approach can help to develop a strengths-based, reflective leader that is able to adapt their leadership approach to the situation whilst supporting and developing others and valuing the role of the follower. This can in turn prevent some of the poorer outcomes of care seen in some of the reports and inquires noted within this chapter.
