ABSTRACT

In contrast to pressed records, this chapter discusses lathe-cut records. Production of lathe-cut records involves cutting grooves directly into a playable disc using a lathe. Both pressed and lathe-cut records have unique features and benefits; each offers a distinctive sound and aesthetic. Artists and musicians looking for a more unique, handmade quality in their recordings often favor lathe-cut records. They have limited production runs and a more personal touch, making them well-suited for special editions and limited releases. This chapter highlights the unique features and benefits of lathe cutting, providing a comprehensive overview of what makes them unique and special.
