ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines laws that target behaviors associated with homelessness in Myrtle Beach and the surrounding county. Using their interviews and experiences as evidence, the authors demonstrate how these laws and practices affect the lives of people experiencing homelessness. They discuss how interactions with the criminal justice system (e.g., being ticketed, arrested, or imprisoned) can cause or prolong homelessness and how experiencing homelessness makes interacting with the criminal justice system more likely. They also discuss alternatives to criminalization that are less costly to individuals and the community.
