ABSTRACT

It is difficult for individuals to fix structural problems. So, what can community members do to help relieve the burden of homelessness for individuals experiencing it? This chapter discusses The Poverty Project, an initiative the authors started at their university, and their advocacy efforts. The Poverty Project creates programs to help alleviate some of the immediate difficulties people experiencing homelessness in Myrtle Beach face. The attention the authors garnered from the media and non-profit organizations has given the authors a voice to advocate for structural changes and shift public perceptions of homelessness. The following chapter will discuss how the Poverty Project came about and how social science research can complement and inform social action.
