ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a warning: “Please don’t start another social enterprise!” Not everyone should start a social enterprise. But for those who should, here is some advice on which model to choose as far as for-profit structures, non-profit structures, and tandem hybrid structures. Whatever the structure, the world needs more social enterprises for several reasons: Problems need solving, planet Earth needs saving, and people need meaning. The chapter—and book—conclude with the tandem hybrid promise. While all social enterprises have the potential to address some of the world’s most pressing problems, the tandem hybrid model is especially promising because of the scale at which profit and purpose coalesce. When the force of the market drives the heart of the mission, large-scale change can happen.
