ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates social therapeutic coaching practices by showing 12 scenes from Life Development Groups. The interactions of group participants and the coach call attention to the conceptual elements of social therapeutics presented in Part I. The authors have created thematic sections beginning with how clients and the coach might ask for help from the group. Next are examples illustrating how emotional pain becomes deprivatized in group, creating space for the growth of both the group and individuals in the group. Final examples showcase how groups create meaning together out of what they give to building the group. In total, the reader will experience key social therapeutic concepts in practice: Seeing the group, performance direction, individual growth as part of group growth, language games, the creation of the emotional zpd, the group and individuals performing ahead of themselves. Each sample group session builds upon the discussion and examples from the previous chapter regarding the coach’s leadership role in guiding the group in building environments for growth.
