ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the representation of Al-Jazeera and BBC of victims of Covid-19, providing detailed analysis of the discourse employed to represent them. The two channels have used the exemplification strategy, providing examples of victims who suffered from the pandemic and who were neglected, as they were seen as a threat to their surroundings. In their coverage of these cases, the two channels adopted the individualisation and collectivisation strategy, underscoring the significance of individuals and groups in fighting Covid-19. The analysis also shows that the two channels warned their audience of the gravity and impact of the pandemic on individuals, families and communities, highlighting domestic violence as one of the impact of lockdowns on families. The analysis shows that domestic violence surged quite dramatically during the pandemic.
