ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the coverage by the BBC and Al-Jazeera of Covid-19 and the framing of China. The analysis reveals that both channels were generally positive about their representation of China as a source of the pandemic. There appears to be a tendency to support the Chinese population over the government, as Chinese people were framed as “law-abiding”, “disciplined” and willing to collaborate to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Whilst discussing Covid-19, the two channels dedicated a space to discussion of the origin of the virus and the allegations that it had been artificially manufactured in China, reporting different voices that seem to advance this side of the argument. Despite this, the two channels adopted a positive approach, which could be attributed to the urgent need for solidarity and unity to combat the deadly virus.
