ABSTRACT

The origins and nature of language have fascinated human minds since the dawn of civilization. ‘News' is the keyword in journalism. It encompasses the ideas of new and interesting because it refers to the relaying of events that are both recent and relevant. Because of its key role as a language of international communication, English is increasingly used as the language of the news; it allows information to flow openly and regional voices to be heard internationally. In South Asia, for example, the use of English in the media industry is being promoted officially, as it is deemed essential to exchange information internationally and to face the present-day challenges of social and economic developments. A distinction is made between two categories of news stories: hard news and soft news. This chapter briefly discusses the nature of localization in news headlines because the category of setting has a diminished role in headlines.
