ABSTRACT

South Asia, an important region consisting of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, and Bhutan, occupies an important strategic position in the world. Domestic ethnic conflicts have a spillover effect across state boundaries. The trans-regional dynamics of the role of expatriates and also of extra-regional powers can further exacerbate the ethnic conflicts. The countries of South Asia share a relationship of conflict and cooperation. This chapter outlines hegemony and legitimization as two central concepts emergent in policymaking particularly in crises. Building on a study of theoretical frameworks to examine the intersection between media and conflict, the chapter categorizes, outlines, and provides a critical overview of various theoretical understandings. It analyzes the selected editorials of the Sri Lankan English newspapers on the topic. The chapter traces an ethnopolitical significance in its editorial structure projecting binary positions in intervention and resolution.
