ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses the notion of the content of media from a certain linguistic angle, using particular linguistic instruments. It claims that to compose a general theory of the content of media, it is necessary to reflect on language. Naturally, linguistics should serve as a guide for the broader study of the content of media, and its findings should be generalized as far as they can be. The book explores an alternative way of approaching the study of the content of media, which reverses the picture, giving priority to semantics and largely presupposing the rest. It discusses how, consciously or unconsciously, journalists may promote different interpretations of the news through the linguistic choices they make in their texts. Knowing how language is used in the text can help the reader understand how the message is construed and “read through” the news.
