ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will focus our attentions more specifically on the very real learning that is happening in the minds and bodies of babies as they seek to understand how this complex and fascinating world works. We will consider how development is embedded within every learning opportunity and the difference you can make every day in a young child's life. Through this chapter you will become aware of a baby's moods as you learn to tune in to their physical comfort as well as their need for responsive and emotive attention. And you will learn how to set the scene for a lifetime of learning through the experiences, relationships and environments that you offer. Having read this chapter, you will:

Know how children learn in the first years of life, the experiences this learning depends on and the attachments and sense of security that are needed

Understand the importance of every moment in these first years, with particular attention to their developing communication and social skills

Be supported in implementing the foundations of lifelong learning with babies and helping all the key adults in their life to do the same.
