ABSTRACT

Children need to take risks, to see what they can do and to understand the skills or abilities they need to tackle next – all of which is a natural part of the learning process. As children develop this courage to try new things, they are stretching what they believe to be their limits, and in doing so, are achieving greater rewards that fuel their bravery the next time a new experience presents itself. For a very young child, simply being in a new environment or around unfamiliar faces requires a degree of bravery. But to do this, children need to experience what it means to try things they are not yet confident in, with the encouragement and support of the trusted adults around them. In this chapter you will learn why it is important for babies to be brave with their approaches to learning. You will understand how you can develop their ability and desire to embrace their courage and confidence and gain the support you need to reflect on your practice and the experiences you offer. Having read this chapter, you will:

Know why it is important for babies to be brave

Understand how to develop a baby's ability and desire to be brave

Be supported in offering practice, environments and experiences where babies can be brave.
