ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will begin looking at the roots of happiness, well-being and self-reliance. When a child is born, they have no understanding of themselves as a separate person. Developing a sense of being someone different is something that happens over time as they develop the mental, emotional, and behavioural functions necessary to see themselves as a separate person. By allowing a child the opportunity to do things for themselves, they get to feel what their bodies can do. When they have the chance to select their own goals and master their environment they develop a sense of personal power, of self-esteem and resilience. It is then key that we support children in this process through the opportunities, engagements and interactions we offer them from day one. Having read this chapter, you will:

Know what competence, confidence and worthiness mean during early childhood and the impact they have on a developing child

Understand how the experiences a baby is offered and the messages they are given can impact their self-esteem and significantly impact their well-being

Be supported in offering babies the experiences they need so that they may all feel competent, confident and worthy, now and for all the years to come.
