ABSTRACT

During his tenure as “Resident Psychotherapist” at B.B.C. Radio 2, the author appeared on many broadcasts, helping to disseminate psychological knowledge as widely as possible, often speaking to approximately 15,000,000 people in the United Kingdom on a weekly basis. In this chapter, Professor Brett Kahr provides us with a glimpse into one of his late-night appearances on a popular radio programme hosted by Janice Long, in which he and the presenter discussed eating disorders with one another and with many callers, including a male bulimic lorry driver. This chapter furnishes readers with a concise and compelling encapsulation of the nature of media psychoanalytical broadcasting, as well as an exploration of the hesitancy among many contemporary mental health professionals – especially those within the psychoanalytical community – to embrace collaboration with the media.
