ABSTRACT

In 2005, the author co-presented a four-part factual entertainment series on B.B.C. television, entitled Making Slough Happy, a pioneering effort in the now well-established field of “positive psychology”. The author explains how he worked on camera with the residents of Slough, in the English county of Berkshire, to eradicate some of their long-standing mental health problems and preoccupations. Throughout this chapter, Kahr focuses, in particular, on how he integrated his psychological training and background with his abilities as a pianist to create the Slough Choir, which provided much psychological engagement to the participants, culminating in a large-scale closing event in which members of the community sang a song entitled “We’re Gonna Change the World”, composed by Kahr especially for this television programme.
