ABSTRACT

In his capacity as Chair of the Society of Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists, the Professional Association of the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships at the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology – the precursor organisation to the Tavistock Relationships Association of Psychotherapists and Counsellors – the author hosted a special evening at the Royal Opera House in London, designed to introduce members of the general public to the psychodynamics of marital relationships. A panel of distinguished couple psychotherapists shared the stage with several talented professionals from the world of the West End musical theatre, all of whom provided stunning renditions of classic musical theatre songs which illustrate key concepts in the fields of marital psychology and marital psychoanalysis. This essay offers readers a detailed account of the process of producing this event, and it explains how this unique evening facilitated the growth of couple psychotherapy and couple psychoanalysis in the United Kingdom.
