ABSTRACT

Riots, work stoppages, hunger strikes in prisons across the nation have opened the eyes of even the most myopic to the shocking and degrading physical conditions to which prisoners are subjected. The reflex reaction of the conventional reformer to such revelations is to demand ever bigger appropriations for Corrections, and in this he is heartily seconded by prison officialdom. Prison administrators all over, one gathers, order their budgetary priorities in much the same fashion. Central to the strategies of prison administrations in the era of convict rebellion is construction of new prisons, about which the people shall doubtless be hearing a good deal in the coming years. Lucasville Penitentiary in southern Ohio is worth a detour, as the Guide Michelin would say, for anybody who might be curious about the costs, design, and purposes of new prison building.
