ABSTRACT

Christianity came to North Africa and combined with the unique Carthaginian religion. This chapter describes the arrival and traces the influence of Tertullian, who wrote the first significant texts in Latin instead of Greek. It also looks at the impact of the North African Emperor, Septimius Severus, who wanted to be worshipped as a God. Violence came to Carthage with the execution of Perpetua and her companions in the arena, and I discuss the influence of the first-person diary of her experience.
