ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on safety planning with children and is for practitioners with a good awareness of domestic abuse and coercive control who will be undertaking safety planning work. Statistically domestic abuse and coercively controlling behaviours are perpetrated by men with most victims being women. Domestic abuse is one of the most common forms of violence against women and includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse and controlling behaviours by an intimate partner. Domestic abuse occurs in all settings and among all socioeconomic, religious and cultural groups. However, it is important to acknowledge that domestic abuse occurs in lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender relationships and in heterosexual relationships where a female may be the perpetrator. Knowledge of a child's current circumstances, their roles and attachments within their family, and any consequences to them their advice around safety planning may have needs to be addressed and acknowledged.
