ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the rationale behind the application of equalisation in mastering and investigates method and methodology to explain why mastering engineers approach equalisation the way they do. Details concern when to cut and when to boost, why is a shelf appropriate or a bell filter more so. Pre/post processing and the relationship between filter frequency and gain are covered, as well as practical operations such as hearing the gain is not the same as setting the gain. Furthermore, specific techniques such as frequency feathering, elliptical equalisation and extending the frequency range of the master are discussed in detail to make clear how to optimise the master’s frequency range. Practical Mid Side applications, use of Q and the negative effects of equalisation are discussed to give a rounded overview of when to and not to use EQ.
