ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a theoretical framework for analyzing immigrant organizations (IOs). First, it defines the term “immigrant organization” and its synonyms. Then it outlines the limitations of previous research on IOs, highlighting the need for a comprehensive analysis of the various factors that influence their situation. The third part of the chapter provides a detailed analysis of previous concepts and theories related to IOs. Specifically, it focuses on the various factors that impact IOs, including legal frameworks, funding and resources, and socio-political contexts. This analysis outlines the complexity of the challenges IOs face and the need for a more nuanced approach to understanding their situation. Finally, the chapter introduces the original concept of the transnational opportunity structure (TOS), highlighting the significance of the transnational context in shaping the opportunities and constraints facing IOs. Global and micro factors further moderate the TOS. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of this new conceptual framework for further research on IOs and the need for a more comprehensive understanding of their situation.
