ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the authors’ primary research, including worker and employer surveys and interviews. The chapter provides insight into the methodology of the research and acknowledges limitations to the research. The authors provide breakdowns of the demographic research from the worker survey, including findings about age, race, geographic location, gender identity, LGBTQIAA+ status, disability status, caregiving status, neurodivergences, union membership, primary discipline of work, and income information. The authors then present their initial takeaways from the research: Theatrical production is exploitative; theatrical production is racist; theatrical production is rife with gender bias and harassment; theatre production workers also experience ageism and ableism.
