ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the major aetiological theories of sexual offending, including those of David Finkelhor, Tony Ward and William Marshall, among others. It reviews the various models to determine whether the model can account for the offence of viewing child abuse material online. It proposes a developmental aetiology model, encompassing biological (neurological), environmental and social factors creating the trajectory of an offender from pre-birth to compulsively viewing online pornography (adolescent searches), ending with intent providing the final determination of the offending behaviour. It also takes a brief look at female sexual offending. In the case study, the client finally gets his second interview relating to charges being brought against him.
