ABSTRACT

Carl Orff, a German composer, was influenced by the new dance movement of the early 20th century and by Dalcroze eurhythmics and developed work that aimed for a synthesis of dance, music, song and poetic language. Orff believed that every child possesses musical imagination and creativity which can be released and extended through improvisation activities that combine singing, speaking, moving and playing. According to Orff, rhythm is the fundamental medium through which children can be led to explore and learn about music. The principles of Orff’s approach are explained and illustrated in practice.
