ABSTRACT

The romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally (1989) includes an iconic scene known as the “fake orgasm” scene. Using the AI discussed in this book to analyze the scene, this chapter aims to expose its deep layers of meaning so as to better understand Harry, Sally, and the source of their mutual attraction. Through the mediation of the AI, it is revealed that the haters become lovers not because opposites attract, as suggested by the naive theory, but because they emotionally cover each other’s blind spots. As suggested by Mikhail Bakhtin, when two people look at each other, two different worlds are reflected in the pupils of their eyes. The importance of this mutual gaze in romantic relations is exposed through the mediation of the AI.
