ABSTRACT

If FedEx followed through on its threat, the move would come six years before the US$205 million stadium naming contract was set to expire. Shortly after FedEx issued its public statement, other major corporate sponsors of the Redskins, including PepsiCo, Nike, and Bank of America, came out in support of the team changing its name. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a middle-aged black man, died in police custody while being detained on a Minneapolis, Minnesota, street after allegedly using a counterfeit bank note. The long and contentious history of the Washington Redskins began in the early 1930s in Boston. The biggest challenge facing the Washington franchise is not deciding on a new logotype, but rather overcoming decades of poor public perception. The struggle for Washington is that brand identity and perception will continue to be skewed by the organization's history long after a new logo is stickered onto helmets.
