ABSTRACT

Amazon Go, the first cashierless convenience store, is open for business. Before shopping, customers download the Amazon Go app and connect it to their Amazon account. Amazon's technology is an innovative application of artificial intelligence. Critics see a downside, however, to encouraging too much automation in labor-driven industries. Launching the Amazon Go store is the third move Amazon has recently made in the grocery space. In 2017, Amazon announced AmazonFresh, a fresh produce delivery service available in select major cities in the United States and abroad. Amazon promoted Amazon Go through its website and YouTube but did not prominently advertise the opening day. A press release from February 1, 2018, highlighted the store's novelty and technological innovation:Amazon Go, a new kind of store with no checkout required, is now open to the public in Seattle.
