ABSTRACT
Like the more notorious McCarthy era, America's first wave of widespread anti-communist fear, in 1919, was an ideological conspiracy theory run amok. It was filled with exaggerations, inventions, and anti-radical propaganda so twisted that thousands of Americans were persecuted, deported, or even killed. Journalists mainly trumpeted the government line, although voices of dissent in both realms spoke out in protest.
