ABSTRACT

Unlike many topics in this book, which occasioned misrepresentation from the outset and gradually won fairer coverage during the twentieth century, drug stories underwent nearly the opposite treatment. Information about cannabis, cocaine, opium, and other products became notably less accurate in the 1900s, as policy became entangled in racist politics and cultural demagoguery. One consequence of that suppression and distortion has been a longstanding dearth of research about drugs and drug use.
