ABSTRACT

After the expiration of the FCC's old Fairness Doctrine in 1987, new media voices emerged. These individuals have primarily been political entertainers with no discernible interest in journalism or regard for the truth. The result has been greater political polarization, as each party has moved farther away from the other. One has zoomed much farther and faster, however. That has produced a spate of partisan disinformation, an asymmetrical one, with the bulk coming from extremists from the far right, who continue to peddle easily disprovable claims and conspiracy theories. Those lies have now captured leading members of Congress and the political outlets that support them.
