ABSTRACT
From witch hunts to anti-Masonic scares, rampaging wild animals to space aliens, hoaxes and conspiracy theories came into being with the first pamphlets and newspapers. These comprise the more spectacular examples of disinformation and, while common, hardly typified the daily norm. Quieter examples, however, abounded in routine fakery and falsification of sources, narratives, and even wholesale events.
