ABSTRACT
European and American racial hierarchy assigned Black people a status even lower than that of other non-white populations. To rationalize this belief, they manufactured a large assortment of lies. These ranged from an alleged lack of humanity, educability, and moral restraint--distortions that African Americans fought in word and deed, a process that gained momentum in the late nineteenth century and continues even today.
