ABSTRACT

Throughout American history, few topics incited as many false stories and motifs in the media as news of labor protests and unions. Newspapers and wire agencies lied routinely about these individuals and organizations, ignoring the causes, distorting the coverage, and in some cases colluding with employers to silence and discredit workers and their families. The press often reflected the frequently brutal and callous attitude of companies and their strikebreakers, and that meant saying whatever they thought necessary to hide the truth from audiences.
