ABSTRACT
Immigrants have long provided a regular source for scapegoating in the press. Writers depicted the newcomers as a “horde” of invaders out to steal jobs, corrupt women, lower morals, and undermine American democracy. Many immigrants launched their own newspapers to fight back. But it was a long-term process, one that seldom shielded them from violent attacks and crude slanders.
